It is the second largest fish in the world after the Whale Shark. When it is feeding, it slowly swims on the surface with its mouth wide open, filtering the water laden with the plankton it feeds on, which is retained thanks to special appendages, called gills, placed inside the gills.
In recent years it seems that its frequency in the Mediterranean has increased.
