It is a migratory species that overwinters in tropical and subtropical areas and nests in late spring – summer, laying 1 to 4 eggs per brood.
With its thin and pointed beak, it identifies its prey from above (small fish, crustaceans and molluscs) and dives into the sea to eat them. The tail has a particular forked shape.
