The largest bony fish currently living, it has a flat, rounded body. The tail is almost non-existent and therefore the locomotion is entrusted to the dorsal and anal fins, very developed in length and very robust. In the Mediterranean, it is mostly observed in spring – early summer when it comes to the surface to feed on large quantities of Velelle.
It is not uncommon to find it stationary horizontally on the surface of the water while it lets itself be pecked by sea birds that cleanse its body from parasites.
